Today we celebrate a birth in Bethlehem. A baby soft and sweet. A king. Hope's prime vessel; evil's chief opponent.
This baby inspired warrior angels to sing, a star to blaze bright, sages and shepherds to bring gifts, and a king to cower. This child, conceived to an unwed mother, born in King David's town, is no stranger to scandal's touch from his humble beginning.
This child grows and teaches rabbis in his Father's house.
He reminds us it's not always the person who looks, eats, smells, acts, or dresses like us who stops to help the man left beaten on the side of the road. He respects people of all colors. That much is true. What is more true is, through this Jewish babe who will grow up in backwoods Nazareth, all people of all colors were made, are held together, have their being.
This child will remind us we must become like children to enter his kingdom.
This child will offer grace to those manipulated by a system they have no control over and scorn to those who uphold systems that exploit the weak.
This child will feed five thousand with a sack lunch.
This child will seek solitude and be met with the Accuser's temptation or the crowds' great needs.
This child fused to flesh to renew and restore it. He is now the first fruits of what our skin and bones will be.
This child will teach us big hearts trump big bank accounts.
This child will remind us women are not to be exploited or undervalued. They are witnesses of his resurrection. They are among his best friends and closest followers.
This child will love prostitutes, embezzlers, oath breakers. He will challenge legalists, politicians, and the crowds.
This child will not be able to win for losing. While his cousin will pass on stiff drink he will ask for seconds. Both still manage to cause trouble most places.
This child will heal the ear of his arrestor, a military extension of his countrymen's oppressor.
This child was royal but thought our relationship with his father reason enough to relinquish his status. He always pointed to his father.
This child will intercept a terrorist on his way to Damascus and change his mind. Through that he will change the hearts of the suspicious Jerusalem community.
This child was born to call out evil in political, social, and spiritual incarnations. This showdown will be final. It will be brutal. It will unravel death.
This child, born in the town of David, is a king. He is our king.
In the town of David, a Savior has been born. He is Christ our Lord.
